A drummer, a start-up founder, and a lawyer form a band. That’s not the setup for a joke, that’s the actual story behind Alpha Mortal Foxtrot. The Jakarta, Indonesia-based alternative rock group was formed in 2019 when drummer Raiden Soejono began jamming with his guitar-playing junior high friend Ricky Putra a.k.a. the start-up guy. Soon they recruited vocalist-guitarist Wiku Anindito, for whom the band reignited the passion for music that he almost set aside to focus on his career as an IP and tech lawyer, and whose songs form the core of Alpha Mortal Foxtrot’s repertoire.
Drawing from influences such as early Smashing Pumpkins, Interpol, Swervedriver and Porcupine Tree, Alpha Mortal Foxtrot’s music - which they describe as alt-rock with sonic soundscapes that you can sing to - is a potent mix of Wiku’s hushed vocals, Ricky’s incisive guitar playing and the powerful percussion of Raiden, who had previously drummed for the legendary likes of Iwan Fals and Roxx. From the brevity of “White Collar” to the sprawling “No One Will Talk About Us (No One Will Owe Us Anything)”, their songs touch on subjects such as domestic violence, autism, and the 9-to-5 grind of their own daily lives.
With a string of singles attracting attention from music blogs both local and abroad, the future looks promising for Alpha Mortal Foxtrot. And that’s no joke, either.
