Alphaville was founded in 1983 by Marian Gold, Bernhard Lloyd and Frank Mertens in Münster. With hits such as Big in Japan, Sounds Like a Melody and Forever Young from their debut album, they became one of the most successful German bands. After personnel changes and albums such as Afternoons in Utopia, 1986, The Breathtaking Blue, 1989, Prostitute, 1992 and Salvation, 1997, Alphaville, in 2001, moved their ongoing music production to an online audience which could follow the creation of their music live. The result of this experiment was the the album CrazyShow in 2003. Alphaville returned to the charts in 2010 with Catching Rays on Giant. The darker-coloured album Strange Attractor was released in 2017. The current line-up was also formed during this time: Marian Gold (vocals), Carsten Brocker (keys), Alexandra Merl (bass), David Goodes (guitar) and Jakob Kiersch (drums). For its 40th anniversary, Alphaville released the symphonic album Eternally Yours, which reached number 2 in the German charts and was accompanied by a sold-out orchestra tour. In 2024 the compilation Forever! Best of 40 Years was released. At the same time, Forever Young experienced a spectacular comeback: viral on TikTok, #1 in the Billboard charts and in a new version with David Guetta and Ava Max. In 2025, the band was honoured with the European Culture Prize. With concerts until 2026 and a new studio album in the works, Alphaville are once again setting off for new horizons.
