American Memories" was founded in the late summer of 2011 by Trey Hanawalt and Elle Gilliam. Together, they composed and recorded several songs, eventually releasing an EP. Initially named "South End Projects," the band underwent a name change, becoming "American Memories." After a period as a three-piece band, with Mark Shaw on bass guitar, the group transitioned into a two-piece format. In 2016, the band relocated to Portland, Oregon. Currently, Elle Gilliam and Trey Hanawalt continue to release music under the "American Memories" moniker as an online project since the members no longer live near each other.
