Under the direction of multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Jeno Zsigó, Ando Drom has devoted themselves to the preservation and continued evolution of the gypsy tradition. Their repertoire, which includes ballads, romantic suites, and festive songs, is comprised of traditional tunes, adaptations, and original songs from every segment of the gypsy nation. Two-time winners of the prestigious Nivo prize, Ando Drom, which means "on the road" in the Romany language, craft their sound from a mixture of Hungarian gypsy instruments, including the kanna, and Western instrumentation such as guitar and mandolin. Percussive accompaniment is performed on spoons, jugs, and kettles, while bass sounds are re-created by a unique range of mouth sounds. Ando Drom's third album, Phari Mamo, released in 1995, featured accompaniment by musicians of the French group Bratsche. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
