Victoria Port and Max Wheeler AKA Anushka, originally met whilst exploring Brighton’s legendary club culture, gaining support from Gilles Peterson for their first single “Yes Guess” a few weeks after settling down to work on the track.
Anushka then signed to his Brownswood Recordings label in 2014 and released their Distorted Air EP which brought to life their love and understanding of jazz, musicality, connection with the living dance floor and the pull and push of love. Their debut album Broken Circuit followed shortly after and gained support from the likes of Annie Mac, Phil Taggart, Jamz Supernova, B.Traits Mary Anne Hobbs and Gilles alongside features in The Guardian, The Arts Desk and Dazed.
Anushka’s third and new album Ancestry on the iconic label BBE develops their sound further. With songs inspired by ancestry, motherhood and origins, this record takes Anushka back to the source. Victoria’s songwriting charts the course from Ella Fitzgerald to Sampha, via Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Jimmy Cliff. She talks about motherhood, joy and the shared experience of being overwhelmed under late capital.
Three albums in, this BBE record might represent some of the best songs, the best production, the best collaboration yet.
From the moment Gilles Peterson first played an early demo of their first track “Yes Guess” on the radio starting their journey in motion, Ancestry charts the journey but also shows that they are looking firmly at the future…
