Ashok Prince was a Punjabi folk singer most prominently known for his powerful, reverent vocal performances and his collaborations with esteemed bhangra and hip-hop producers. Hailing from the Jalandhar District of Punjab in the Indian village of Nathowal, he first took an interest in singing while at school. His talent became instantly recognizable, and he went on to win many singing competitions during his studies, gaining second position in the Inter University Folk Singing competition at the Nakodar Arya College. The young vocalist eventually relocated to the Netherlands in 1997, where he received further training, both in singing and music, from Ghazal singer Manjit Chand. His career continued to burgeon, with numerous performances across the Netherlands and the rest of Europe. In 2008, he was awarded Best European Singer by the Bhagat Dhanna Jat Sikh Society in Germany. He released Qaid Boly Gayi in 2009. The record was produced by fellow Netherlands-based musician Harminder Singh Sangha and was released through Speed Records India. He went on to collaborate with U.K.-based bhangra and hip-hop producer Tru Skool in 2016. The two released the collaborative effort One Time 4 Ya Mind. ~ Rob Wacey, Rovi
