Auscultation is an atmospheric house project of Portland, Oregon-based electronic musician Joel Shanahan, otherwise known as Golden Donna and Purpura. On releases such as 2020 full-length III, he blends sophisticated beat patterns with smooth, shifting textures and uplifting melodies.

Initially based in Madison, Wisconsin, Shanahan started releasing material as Golden Donna during the early 2010s, and ran a small label called Signal Dreams. Golden Donna, an LP of shimmering, arpeggio-heavy electro soundscapes, was released by Not Not Fun in November of 2012. While the project continued issuing cassettes and 12" EPs on various labels, including CGI Records and NNF's sister 100% Silk, Shanahan began releasing more deep house-influenced material as Auscultation. The moniker's self-titled cassette appeared on 1080p in 2014, and the more expansive L’étreinte Imaginaire was issued by 100% Silk the following year. A handful of limited releases and compilation appearances preceded Auscultation's first vinyl LP, III, which was released by 100% Silk in 2020. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
