Axel Bauer is a French songwriter, singer and guitarist who first rose to fame in 1983 with “Cargo”, a groundbreaking track that became a cultural phenomenon. Spending months at number one, the song introduced a bold new sound and a striking visual identity through its video by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, the first ever broadcast on MTV France. Its impact even reached Roger Daltrey of The Who, who recorded an English version titled “Take Me Home.”
Recognized as one of France’s most skilled and expressive guitarists, Bauer has built a singular world — poetic lyrics, melodic rock, and cinematic imagery. His signature songs include “Éteins la lumière” (1990) and the platinum duet “À ma place” with Zazie (2002).
Highlights include Bad Cowboy (2006), Peaux de Serpent (2013), Live à Ferber (2017), and Radio Londres (2022), acclaimed for their depth and followed by a major French tour. Bauer has also collaborated with Gérard Manset, Miossec, Jean-Louis Aubert, and Catherine Ringer.
In May 2025, he released “Merde à la Mer”, a daring and surreal punk rock collaboration with Brigitte Fontaine, accompanied by a punchy dreamlike video.
A new album (2026) is on the way, blending lyrical intensity, modern rock production, and the unmistakable tone of his guitar work.
