Axxa/ Abraxas, the art/psych rock project of Ben Asbury, was born and incubated in Athens, GA in 2010. Influenced by labels such as Shrimper and early Rough Trade, Axxa/ Abraxas has stuck to a strict diy aesthetic while cultivating their unique brand of raw psychedelia. After a string of limited cassette releases on Asbury’s own RTA records, Axxa/ Abraxas recorded their debut LP with Jarvis Taveniere of Woods which was released through Captured Tracks in 2014. In the meantime Asbury relocated to Asheville, NC to form a touring band with some longtime friends/ collaborators.
After spending the better part of the rest of 2014 touring, a number of set backs, line-up changes, and the Winter led Asbury to move into his van/ a storage unit in the Spring of 2015 where Asbury began recording the songs that would end up on ‘Family Altar.’ This album finds Asbury returning to the production styles and techniques indicative of the early Axxa recordings. ‘Family Altar’ was completed in early 2016 and released via RTA in March 2017.
After touring behind 'Family Altar,' Asbury spent the rest of 2017 writing and recording the follow up 3rd LP, 'Get Weird or Die Boring.' The album sees more complex songwriting and a fairly big step up in fidelity. The album has increased influence from late 80s/ early 90s alt/noise rock along with the continued influence of early psych and post-punk. 'Get Weird or Die Boring' is out April 5, 2019 via RTA.
