Betty Blight lives in Bristol, UK, where she writes, sings and performs folk songs on acoustic guitar. Her songs renew old ideas of English folklore, taking literary and historical figures as inspiration to deal with exile, youth, being an outcast, and women on the wrong side of power. A response to global politics brought about the creation of this apocalyptic folk songstress, named after White Witch, Thomasine Blight, whose magic has accompanied Betty during serious illness and a return to the British Isles in 2019.
Born in the naval city of Portsmouth, Betty writes songs on guitar and voice. She lived in Argentina for 14 years, but is now back in the UK recording new songs on reel-to-reel with Dan Weltman.
In April 2025 she releases album Over the Water Over the Sea with American-Argentine artist Diente de Madera and in May 2025 an album of songs for Beltane with folk trio The Scruffy Pooks. Her previous EPs, Little One (2021) and Queen Misery (2016) were recorded, mixed and mastered in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Hastings, UK by James Stonehewer.
Betty’s musical trajectory has spanned various genres, including the medieval noise of Elffenzwölff (Portsmouth, UK, 2005), kraut noise Klub der Klang (Buenos Aires, 2006-2009), female postpunk trio Las Kellies (2009-2012) working with Dennis Bovell and Fire Records, to cumbia anomaly and legend, Betty Confetti (2010-2019), whose contagious Latin dance songs took the Buenos Aires and European scene by storm.
