Temple of BF/C was formed in San Francisco in 2015 by Barish Firatli and Joel Igor Hammad Magnusson (aka Californiaman), two artists bridging continents and genres with cinematic flair and poetic depth. Barish hails from Gothenburg, while Joel emerged from Sweden’s vibrant music scene.
Barish’s distinct voice stems from piano lessons in Sweden and Buddhist-infused vocal training in California. Joel, a bassist-turned-producer, honed his craft at Svenska Grammofonstudion. When the two reunited in San Francisco, Temple of BF/C was born.
Steeped in drum machines, synth, acoustic guitar, and smouldering bass, BF/C maneuvers in electropop painted in vivid, warm hues. With the crooning swagger of Rod Stewart; retro slick influences like Roxy Music, INXS, and Fine Young Cannibals; and the haunted edge of The Knife, St. Lucia, and The Embassy, the duo invokes desire, seduction, and longing in equal parts.
Releases and highlights:
BF/C has released two LPs—The Unexpected Consequences of Feathers (2019) and Valet (2021)—along with the Swedish EP Den Goda människan I Sequan (2017) and their debut BF/C EP (2016). Their third full-length album is due in 2025. Debut singles Temple and Upstate earned standout blog and playlist buzz, while Year of the Rat gained recognition in a Swedish cinema campaign. They’ve performed in Istanbul, Stockholm, and Vancouver, and collaborated with icons like Kleerup and Nicolai Dunger. Joel has also toured with Wyclef Jean, Hoffmaestro, and Timo Räisänen.
