On hearing the name Bjørk Stellar, you’d expect him to hail from the endless fjords and rugged landscapes of Scandinavia. Yet names can be deceptive, for apart from his fascination for typical Nordic minimalism, the only thing linking him to that part of the world is his passion for avant-garde electronic music by the likes of Ólafur Arnalds and Jan Rasmussen. Björk Stellar – real name Max W. – actually comes from the German city of Leipzig, and produces and performs electronic music as both a DJ and live act. He’s spent the last eight years playing tech house and deep house at clubs and festivals up and down Germany under a pseudonym. He’s already released more than 15 EPs and a studio album, including not just solo works but also collaborations with various artists.

Bjørk fronts genre-spanning, creative productions. Adeptly wielding deep-acoustic elements and heavenly sounds, his music conveys a sense of weightlessness enabling listeners to conjure up their own stories. Typical dancefloor strands are interspersed with a broad sonic palette of dark and light tones combined with a strong emphasis on vocals and song-writing. Another element that clearly stands out is Bjørk’s affinity for multimedia themes. Between art and audio-visual formats, sound as a means of both communication and transport is more than just a prominent component of his production process – it’s also part and parcel of his flamboyant approach.
