In late 2005, Stu McKillop (Daggermouth) and Bill Crook (A Textbook Tragedy) began work on an aspirational project in the suburbs of Vancouver, Canada. Incorporating the gamut of their ever-changing musical tastes, the duo mixed the complexities of math rock with the trance of synth-wave and the choruses of pop-punk. The result was an 8+ minute track unlike anything they’d ever heard.
Unsure of what they’d created, the two recruited drummer Nick Yacyshyn (A Textbook Tragedy) and released the instrumental on a makeshift Myspace page - under the name boomfuckinboom (a reference to an obscure Family Guy character).
As word spread and downloads grew, a pressing question emerged. "Is somebody actually going to sing on this track?" Though several friends and bandmates would vie for the chance, the group had a specific voice in mind.
On January 1, 2006, the band – at Bill’s insistence – asked Andy Roy (Remember August) to audition for the role. Intimidated by the line-up and task, Andy initially declined. An hour later, he called back and received an invitation to The Hive studios.
Upon arrival (and following an exchange of Adam Sandler quotes), Andy was asked to record his vocal ideas. No pressure, but no promises.
After the first line of the first take, Stu abruptly stopped the tape.
“Boom! Boom! auditions are officially closed. The line-up is complete”.
Boom! Boom! will always be:
Bass – Bill Crook
Drums – Nick Yacyshyn
Guitar – Stu McKillop
Vocals – Andy Roy
