Born in Autumn is the solo project of Stephen Hastings. Stephen is originally from Scotland and started writing and playing electronic music in the early nineties. Stephen migrated to Australia in April 2003, and then New Zealand in 2016, inspired by his new environment, his sound really started to evolve into a blend of folk, electronica and psychedelic pop. He moved away from the mechanical sounds of traditional electronic music in favour of sampled real instruments, vocal harmonies and field recordings, in order to create a more organic, psychedelic sound. The sounds you hear in this recent material – layered vocals, various acoustic and electric guitars, bass, drums, piano, analogue synthesisers etc. – are performed by Stephen in his home studio and are the key to his unique, deep, layered and emotional sound. Some of his inspirations include Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Boards of Canada, Bibio, Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works, Laura Marling, Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, John Fahey, Sufjan Stevens, New Order, The Stone Roses, Tame Impala and The Beatles during their psychedelic phase.
