Shadow in the Dream is the debut album from award-winning novelist and songwriter, Sam Carmody.
Lyrical and cinematic pop, Shadow in the Dream is a searching record about what sweeps unknown or unnamed beneath the surface.
The latest and final album cut, “Moby Dick”, was inspired by a friend’s experience of grief after the loss of their mother, and the respite from sadness that they found when dreaming– a person returning, vividly and comfortingly, during sleep.
Sam Carmody has won multiple awards for his songwriting and writing. His debut novel The Windy Season was shortlisted for the Australian Vogel’s literary award, and won the 2017 Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction. Judge Christos Tsiolkas (author of The Slap) said of his writing that it was “an impressive achievement”.
Carmody has also previously won a West Australian Music Industry (WAMi) song award.
"Wonderous and tormented in an equal and gentle measure" – Nkechi Anele, Triple J
"A huge call from me but I'll say this about Sam Carmody's music. I reckon he's carrying the torch of The Middle East. Deep and literate songwriting backed by these stirring and oft grand musical flourishes" – Dave Howe, Triple J
