Brendan Byrnes is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and mix engineer based in Los Angeles, CA. He has released a wide range of music created with different musical DNA than most listeners are accustomed to hearing, using new microtonal tuning systems that are wildly different than the ubiquitous 12-tone equal temperament system. Byrnes explores these new, colorful harmonic and melodic possibilities with his refretted guitars and retuned synthesizers to create experimental rock music for the 21st century.
The mention of microtonal music often conjures thoughts of dissonant, dark, and difficult music, but Byrnes finds fragments of familiar beauty in these strange harmonic landscapes. After experimenting with large guitar ensembles, unconventional open guitar tunings, fretless guitars, and prepared guitars, he now focuses on using microtonal guitars that divide the octave into more than the usual 12 notes. These guitars have significantly more frets and provide twists on familiar major and minor chords and, more importantly, “new” notes that are often in tune with the harmonic series and not available in the traditional 12 notes per octave tuning system.
