Casual listeners describe Broadly Speaking as “the kind of band you want to bring home to your parents.” They did a lot to earn this moniker, but they are more than just three and a half pretty faces. Instead, their songs speak for themselves, with music at once old and new accompanied by lyrics both borrowed and blue.
Residing in New York City, Broadly Speaking is composed of singer-songwriter Mark Sibold, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jake Baynum, the bearded backup-singing bassist George Karamanoukian, and drummer / all-around nice guy Kevin Socolow. Three fourths of the band met at Colgate University in Upstate New York, which allows them to write about farms and one-horse towns without coming across as too disingenuous.
Their debut album is due to be released in 2021, but you can find them in the meantime walking dogs, supporting locally-owned businesses, and helping out with the groceries.
