Brother K was born in a basement. Brothers Andrew and Nick Kerhoulas would disappear downstairs to make music. Making music was a staple of their relationship until they moved to different cities. But in 2022, the dream of making an album together became a reality. And because of the amazing generosity of friends and family, they were able to hire their pal, Kevin Burtram (@summerstarved), to produce the album. Eighteen months later, Brother K released their debut album, the Locomotive EP, from captivity.
During the pandemic, Andrew read a poem by Jack Gilbert called "A Brief For The Defense." Gilbert wrote,
“We can do without pleasure, but not delight. Not enjoyment. We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world. To make injustice the only measure of our attention is to praise the Devil. If the locomotive of the Lord runs us down, we should give thanks that the end had magnitude. We must admit there will be music despite everything.”
This is where the EP gets its name and it inspired Brother K to start dreaming about making an album—despite everything.
The Locomotive EP is a concatenation of sacred and not-so-sacred songs, a couple of reimagined hymns, original pop songs, and rock & roll. Brother K set out to create a sonic experience to remind us that Beauty, not brokenness, has the final word.
