Brotherly grew out of the collaboration of vocalist/pianist Anna Stubbs and multi instrumentalist/producer Rob Mullarkey in late 90s London. At that time, experiments with jazz/broken beat/D&B were pushing boundaries. Being students at the Guildhall meant access to skilled string and horn players, and state of the art recording facilities, which inspired the team to build their own studio to create in.
Brotherly released tunes on Hospital Records and Bitasweet which were picked up by Gilles Peterson and BenjiB. After the success of Put It Out, Brotherly were asked to record at Maida Vale Studios by Gilles, and were nominated for Radio 1 Worldwide best live session of the year. System continues to be a massive inspiration to musicians, and there are 100s of YouTube videos of drummers trying to beat the system of the time modulations.
They are currently signed to Whirlwind Recordings and are releasing a double vinyl album called Analects of 16 of their best tracks, with new featured artists and a brand new never before heard track ‘The Code’. Analects is due out in Dec 2020.
