2024 is moving forward, and the six-piece band Calicos from Antwerp doesn't mind at all. Towards the end of the year, their long-awaited second album will be released, and they will promote it with an unmissable tour through Belgium and the Netherlands.
Having won the Rock Rally 2018, Calicos took the time to work on a debut album. The Soft Landing arrived during the height of the pandemic (May 2021) and proved that the band's indie Americana had its place in the Belgian music landscape. Critics praised the album sky-high, and the single "Nova" even became a major alternative hit, spending 3 weeks at number 1 on Vox on Radio 1. Live, the band is solid as a rock, thanks to the excellent collaboration of six skilled craftsmen and the heavenly voice of frontman Quinten Vermaelen. The Netherlands is also won over, and last year they opened for The Haunted Youth, including in a sold-out Paradiso (Amsterdam) and Vera (Groningen).
While the band's sound may have shifted over the years towards the pure indie of Sharon Van Etten or Kurt Vile, the Americana and folk rock of the early years still runs deep in their DNA. "Comedown," "Reliving," and "The Siren" are all sparkling singles that have performed excellently on radio and streaming platforms in recent months. In the final stretch towards their new album, set to release on November 22, the best-kept indie secret of the Low Countries is ready to break through entirely.
