Canjelae, born “Canjelae L’che” in Bermuda, comes from a long line of known storytellers, poets, artists, and singers. As a child, she participated in ballet, jazz, gymnastics, drama, and even played a little cricket. With all those talents, it wasn’t until a teacher found her singing in a grade school bathroom that Canjelae discovered her passion for music.
Throughout her early teens Canjelae, known affectionately as “Canji”, would find her herself lost in the piano, using music as an escape from the many changes, emotions, and rollercoasters life had in store. By the age of 17, she released her first single, “I’m Free.” An instant hit on her island home, the record shot to the top of charts and landed at number one on Bermudian Radio. The stars were aligned and not long after her new found acclaim, Canjelae enrolled in and ultimately won a prestigious talent competition and was awarded a scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Today, as a natural iteration to her lineage, the songbird explores interdisciplinary approaches to music, dance, and theater. A vocally potent elixir of passion and playfulness, Canjelae draws listeners into a world of her own. She welcomes you in to explore this magical place in her forthcoming first full length musical work, Tides.
