Carissa’s Wierd is disarmingly fragile bedroom chamber-pop, and after years of dissolution, obscurity, and an out-of-print back catalog, they have reunited to create some of the very best music of their storied career. Their new album, Somewhere Further Than Far Away, out January 8, is their first new album in 25 years—a collection of hypnotic, heart-wrenching songs built around giant emotions and the beyond-beautiful tragedy of living.
Carissa’s Wierd began in 1995 in Tucson, Arizona, after Mat Brooke and Jenn Champion met as teenagers in the smoking room of a goth dance club. Their friendship quickly grew into a singular musical partnership, defined by intimate bedroom recordings, whisper-sung vocals, and intertwining guitars.
Somewhere Further Than Far Away is more than a return to a beloved band. Made from the distance of 25 years, it carries the weight of everything that came before while sounding completely alive in the present—Carissa’s Wierd at their most expansive, devastating, and beautiful. As they put it: “We felt invited by the world to come back, and we are happy to be here.”
