Cheryl Thompson always espoused dreams of making it big, so when she turned 18 in 1962, she moved from Florida to Las Vegas to pursue a singing career. Thompson cut her teeth working as a showgirl at the Sahara Hotel and Casino and soon met singer and bassist Norman Kaye of the early lounge combo, The Mary Kaye Trio. Thompson and Kaye soon married, catapulting her into a sphere of industry bigwigs and sought-after talent. When Thompson won Miss Las Vegas in 1963 and Miss Nevada in 1964, she parlayed her success into several recording deals, including 1965’s “Don’t Walk Away” b/w “It’s the End,” a Kaye composition released on Chicago’s Vee Jay Records. Thompson’s music often melded rock n’ roll, atmospheric pop, surf rock, and Nashville production values, all bolstered by Thompson’s haunting vocals á la Patsy Cline. Shortly after her Vee Jay release, Thompson retired her mic to focus on her growing family. Thompson passed away in 2003.
