Before he discovered Tommy James, the Vogues, or Lou Christie. Before Fenway Distribution, Co & Ce Records, or Motown Pittsburgh. Before the mob and their money, Nick Cenci was just an eager Pittsburgh mimmo trying to break into the record business. Across state lines in Cleveland, Ohio, James Testa, Gene Toney, and Vladimir Maleckar were a trio of struggling songwriters toiling away at a local record studio under the banner of the Melody Mates. The mates had a stirring instrumental in their back pocket, reminiscent of the Islanders' 1959 Top 20 hit "Enchanted Sea," replete with bell buoys and lapping ocean sound effects. This recording somehow found its way to Cenci in Pittsburgh who added on crucial element to the recording: his voice.
