The Neals brothers were on the rise in Wichita, Kansas. Three of the four brothers formed a large mixed group that took its cues from Santana, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Sly & the Family Stone. Combining funk, rock, outrageous outfits, and various ethnicities into one band, they hit on the truly evocative and somewhat unfortunate Chocolate Snow moniker to describe the fusion. Their ethnic makeup was met with an icy reception in many of the towns and cities they traveled to, but the band of brothers, blood related or otherwise, could not be broken. In the face of blatant hostility, including several chasings from the stage, Chocolate Snow brought their hippie-soul message from coast to coast before approaching Dick Smart to record for Solo Records. Having no true lead singer, they tapped brother C.C. Neal's pipes for "Let ME Be Your Christmas Toy," a maudlin experiment in seasonal soul. But with their take on Wes Montgomery's version of the Beatles' "A Day In The Life," the band really broke ground, yielding and almost unrecognizable take on Lennon & McCartney. After the 45 stiffed, the Neal's found fit to lease "A Day In The Life" out to the local Showcase label, which stuck it on the reverse of a topical tune by local singer Yvonne Dennis in 1974. While the 45 never made it it out of Wichita, Chocolate Snow made a move to California and soon fizzled out.
