Both in their music and in their live performances, Clair Obscur have always challenged forms of representation. In the early 80s, in response to the sheepish way in which rock concerts were conducted, with the typical audience demand for ‘their’ favourite songs, Clair Obscur withdrew from any form of classic concert and created their own ‘rendez-vous’ with the audience. Whether it’s transforming a rock concert into a mock live game show, or reinterpreting their musical material and creating a classical music and dance performance within a punk music festival, all their live acts, conceived in terms of the places where they take place, are led to question the possibilities of a work and its representation. It is in this context that CO has often invited performers, dancers and visual artists to create collaborative works based on specific installations and live performances.
