DeLange (1972) is a Dutch neo-romantic composer and pianist. Experiencing music as colors and shapes (a condition called chromesthesia, or sound-to-color synesthesia), he approaches each composition like a painting in sound. For listeners drawn to the intimate, cinematic side of contemporary piano music, think in the orbit of <a href="spotify:artist:2uFUBdaVGtyMqckSeCl0Qj" data-name="Ludovico Einaudi">Ludovico Einaudi</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:7E3BRXV9ZbCt5lQTCXMTia" data-name="Ólafur Arnalds">Ólafur Arnalds</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2VZNmg4vCnew4Pavo8zDdW" data-name="Max Richter">Max Richter</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:69lxxQvsfAIoQbB20bEPFC" data-name="Philip Glass">Philip Glass</a>, but with DeLange’s own distinctly lyrical, color-driven voice.
Born and raised in a musical family, DeLange grew up with the great voices of the romantic and early modern piano tradition, later completing his classical training at the conservatory. He spent years working as a pianist, writing for and accompanying other artists. At 46, after a long life in music, he felt he had finally found his own voice as a composer and began writing, producing and recording the repertoire under his own name, starting with his debut album ‘Images’ (2020).
After ‘Images’, he expanded his repertoire with the solo piano albums ‘Contemplations ~ Opus I & II’ (2022) and ‘Miniatures’ (2023), and the chamber release ‘La Présence d’un Rêve’ (2024) for piano and horn quartet. With his latest EP ‘Études Mélancoliques’, DeLange opens a new series of lyrical piano études, technical in origin yet shaped by a melancholic undertone.
