Derek Brookshire is a 4th generation guitarist in a tradition that began with his great grandmother. Derek was born in Memphis which is considered by many to be the epicenter of blues, country, rock and roll and soul music. Derek was raised in a house filled with the sounds of jazz and blues and rock emanating from the record collection of his dad, a blues guitarist, avid record collector and music historian. Derek decided to learn guitar as a teen and later aspired to a music education to further his passion for playing.
Derek studied with several guitarists in college including Chip Henderson and former Count Basie guitarist and author Charlton Johnson. He now has his degree in jazz performance and teaches music instruction in different venues in Memphis.
Derek actively continues to pursue playing acoustic fingerstyle guitar in live settings. He has also hosted, played and assisted in various concerts, and seminars becoming friends with many fine artists as well. Among those are William Lee Ellis, Clive Carroll, Stephen Bennett and Bill Mize.
Derek has 2 CD’s out to date and plays gigs and concerts and live performance as well as teaching classes and private instruction. He is working on a music program for children with a companion animated instruction book drawn by Derek himself. Derek and his dad also enjoy painting and do artwork on guitars to pay tribute to different artists and the delta’s music heritage
