DIE HAUT was a band that emerged in the early 1980s from West Berlin's vibrant and rebellious subculture. Originally consisting of Martin Peter, Christoph Dreher, Remo Park and Thomas Wydler, the group developed into an artistic experiment characterised by the creative energy and upheaval of the zeitgeist. The band's name was inspired by the novel "La Pelle" by Curzio Malaparte.
From 1984 onwards, the core lineup changed, when Martin Peter and Remo Park left and guitarists Jochen Arbeit and Rainer Max Lingk joined DIE HAUT. Their music continued to evolve as a blend of post-punk and experimental rock, characterised by unpredictable sounds, complex rhythms, and unmistakable instrumentality, furthemore informed by the guitar riffing of '60s beat bands such as the early Who and psychedelic bands of this time. Numerous international guest vocalists such as Nick Cave, Lydia Lunch, Kim Gordon and Debbie Harry enriched their albums and live performances.
Deeply rooted in the Berlin underground scene, the band's innovative style provided important international impulses for musical projects to come.
At the end of the 1990s, the band members went their separate ways: Jochen Arbeit and Rudi Moser became active in Einstürzende Neubauten, and Thomas Wydler gained fame as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' long-time drummer. DIE HAUT remain anchored in Berlin's music history as a distinctive expression of a wild and artistically productive era.
