DJ Roller is a progressive bluegrass mandolinist based in Richmond, Virginia. He began playing music at age 11 after attending the Galax Fiddlers Convention, and over the past two decades, he has developed a versatile style shaped by both traditional and progressive influences.
Without formal training, DJ learned through immersion in the festival scene, studying directly from musicians willing to share their knowledge. Early influences include David Grisman and Sam Bush, and his exposure to artists like Danny Knicely, Jacob Joliff, and Chris Thile helped expand his musical vision beyond the bounds of traditional bluegrass.
Drawing from a wide range of genres—including jazz, blues, and roots music—DJ’s sound is grounded in bluegrass but informed by broader musical exploration. His distinctive, driving mandolin chop is a hallmark of his style.
He is a two-time 5th-place finalist in the mandolin competition at the Galax Fiddlers Convention and a winner of the mandolin competition at the Maury River Fiddlers Convention. His debut EP highlights his diverse musical background and experience.
