In 2012, as Washed Out was becoming one of the biggest names in chillwave, keyboardist Phil Jones left to resume work on his solo project Dog Bite. Hailing from Atlanta, Jones had used ambient samples and GarageBand beats for his 2008 Owls Eyes EP, prior to collaborating with Washed Out's Ernest Greene. Financed by the success of the Sub Pop release Within and Without, he stocked up on gear and returned to recording solo, taking a more melody-oriented approach for the material on his debut full-length, Velvet Changes. As the album came to a close, Jones announced plans to tour as a live band with members of Balkans, Red Sea, Mood Rings, and his old band, Washed Out, for a 2013 tour with Toro y Moi. Velvet Changes was released early that year. After releasing a split single with Washed Out and the LA EP later in 2013, Dog Bite -- which now counted bassist Woody Shortridge and drummer Tak Takemura as permanent members -- emphasized the influence of soul legends Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes on their music with their second album, 2014's Tranquilizers. ~ Jason Lymangrover, Rovi
