I can’t sing. I can’t play. I do it anyway.
Somehow it all started when I saw Dave Grohl’s big smile on the TV screen. Wait, that’s not entirely true, I had been making music before, but then there was this night when I should have gone to bed earlier because work would be waiting in the morning, but instead I was zapping through the TV, saw Dave Grohl’s big smile and ended up watching a film about the Foo Fighters. Apart from being really tired at work the next day, I decided to record some of the songs I had written and to release them, which I did as BiG FiSH RADiO and with the intention to form a band. All that was completely naïve, as I had no idea about what I really did. After I had released “the 1”, I was asked if I wanted to play my songs at a local singer-songwriter battle, but at first, I didn’t want to, as I wanted to have a rock band again and not be a singer-songwriter. But I tried it anyway and… failed splendidly in the first round. But I learned that I loved playing my songs like this, acoustically and reduced.
Then my oldest nephew died and I wrote down some of the things that were going through my head during the sad days after it had happened. And I made a song about it, “Dear Boy” that I released a few weeks later, just using my name Dominik Monz. A simple acoustic song, raw and unpolished. I think, a good song doesn’t need much. I don’t expect to make great music, I just do what I like. That’s what music should be about.
