Trombonist Don Immel is the son of Dean Immel, a public school music teacher; the grandson of Earl Immel, a lecturer of music at Los Angeles Valley College; and the nephew of Jerrold Immel, a noted composer for film and television. He was born in California, studied piano from ages seven to 11 and began playing the trombone at nine. Don earned undergraduate music degrees from Central Washington University, taught music for the public school system, then attended Rice University earning a Master of Music degree in trombone performance. Past academic positions include Assistant Professor of Trombone and Jazz at Pacific Lutheran University and Associate Professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. Don currently serves as Professor of Music at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Don was Solo Principal trombonist for the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra in Denmark for six seasons, and has performed as guest Principal of the Seattle Symphony/Opera and more recently with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
His current projects include:
- Ensemble Three, an eclectic trio featuring trumpet, trombone and guitar
- Lyrebird Brass, an ensemble of Australia's finest brass musicians
- Trombone Hero recital series
Don has recorded 12 albums to date: 3 as a soloist, 5 with Ensemble Three, and 3 with Lyrebird Brass
