Trumpet player, composer, writer, Duane Carter is one of the best kept secrets out of South Central Los Angeles. Born in Chicago and raised in L.A. where he shared the stage with fellow Locke High School classmates <a href="spotify:artist:1mNnxxnPfHQDOkFjnZmdkc" data-name="Patrice Rushen">Patrice Rushen</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1LJPMbjmWohx8pVh4bZfAs" data-name="Leon "Ndugu" Chancler">Leon "Ndugu" Chancler</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3bhckpkRmz8mqONUceSutp" data-name="Gerald Albright">Gerald Albright</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3TFDeE9cyVkAbFcON4pzt1" data-name="Gary Bias">Gary Bias</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:44WW6k1ZbsjSVZJ6t8nkeI" data-name="Rickey Washington">Rickey Washington</a>, and so many other unsung talents.
He first appeared on record with the Msingi Workshop out of Locke High, the same year they performed at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival. He began performing with various jazz, R & B, and classical ensembles around town while pursuing a music performance degree. Upon completion, Duane dropped off the L.A. scene to further his development while traveling as soloist, composer/arranger throughout the U.S. and Central & South America with the United States Army Band.
Returning to the scene in the mid-nineties he performed regularly with childhood friends <a href="spotify:artist:5iAF0pAWbRordmpPIW9YQf" data-name="Nate Morgan">Nate Morgan</a> (piano) and Andrew Jerald (flute), while completing a master’s degree in writing/composing for musical theatre. Duane soon after recorded his debut Contemporary Jazz album, Boundless (2003). After moving to Austin, TX he began performing with his own bands and recorded his eclectic release, Never Say Never (2008), and publishing his first novel, No Promises (2015).
