“Psychedelic”, “Art-pop”, “Indie rock”? Even after seven albums, three EPs and countless singles, Elk City are still deliberately hard to define, still seekers, unafraid to lead the listener on a journey to new sounds and feelings. Based in Montclair, New Jersey, the bands founding members, vocalist Renée LoBue and drummer/producer Ray Ketchem, along with Luna’s Sean Eden, Richard Baluyut from Versus and Chris Robertson (Feed, Punch Havana) have meticulously built their 2023 album, Undertow, from improvised live-jams that morph and transform with layers of guitars and harmonies. Elk City’s live shows also push the boundaries of what a band should be, adding and subtracting, sometimes pulling James Baluyut (Versus) into the vortex.
