Ella Hooper was just 13 when she burst onto the Australian music scene fronting the band Killing Heidi. Unearthed by Triple J with the song ‘Kettle’, a folk lament that took listeners by surprise, she was the technicolor teen from the bush that made an impact. Crossover success followed and on her 17th birthday Hooper became the first ever woman and youngest person to be awarded APRA’s Songwriter of the Year.
After releasing three albums with Killing Heidi, Ella embarked on a solo career traversing synth pop (In Tongues) melodic modern folk (Venom/New Magic) and now her new album, Small Town Temple which sees her going back to her country roots. Written in the sleepy hamlet of Violet Town, Victoria – the album has been hailed as a new beginning, showcasing Ella’s personal songwriting and evolving point of view.
After experiencing run away success as a rock front woman, the direction shift might surprise some, but Hooper has always thrown creative curveballs. Sitting alongside her work in the world of TV, radio and podcasting, this new era boasts the strongest material of her career and shows she remains committed to her first love, the craft of songwriting, with results speaking for themselves.
