An American singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Emily Saliers is best known as one-half of the Grammy Award-winning folk-rock/Americana duo <a href="spotify:artist:4wM29TDTr3HI0qFY3KoSFG">Indigo Girls</a>. Born in New Haven, Connecticut and raised in Decatur, Georgia, Saliers befriended her future <a href="spotify:artist:4wM29TDTr3HI0qFY3KoSFG">Indigo Girls</a> partner, <a href="spotify:artist:6FTNWiXksh4ADVB5QdJqCF">Amy Ray</a>, in elementary school. By the time the two were in their mid-teens, they were performing regularly at talent shows and local venues. They began operating under the <a href="spotify:artist:4wM29TDTr3HI0qFY3KoSFG">Indigo Girls</a> moniker while attending Emory College in Atlanta. In 1987 they released their debut album, Strange Fire, independently, and the following year they landed a major-label deal with <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Epic%22">Epic</a>. They hit their commercial stride in 1989 with their eponymous second LP and hit single "Closer to Fine," which was penned by Saliers, and <a href="spotify:artist:4wM29TDTr3HI0qFY3KoSFG">Indigo Girls</a> would go on to release nine more successful major-label outings before self-producing their LPs via their own <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22IG+Recordings%22">IG Recordings</a> company. In addition to her work with <a href="spotify:artist:6FTNWiXksh4ADVB5QdJqCF">Ray</a>, Saliers has composed film scores and co-written a book with her father.
