The new single "New Era" is here, and perfect timing, huh? I wrote New Era during a time in my life when it felt like everything was falling apart all at the same time.
It honestly wasn’t ever going to be a full-on song— I was working with Songwriter/Artist/Producer Richard Orofino on some songs; and the day we finished up on tattoo, we had some time left in the session so we kinda just messed around and wrote New Era. It was so quick— he came up with such cool guitar chords, and immediately a melody came into my mind. The first lyrics I wrote were “I’m doing fantastic, yeah everything’s fine/ you lost your job, and we’re all gonna die” … which is still probably
my favorite thing I’ve ever written. It perfectly encapsulates the sort of catastrophizing I do too often. One bad thing happens and the whole world ends. Anxiety! Fun!
I wanted the song to be short and tense. Dreamy and disconcerting. Richard made this super wild synth, it kinda sounded like a rusty broken machine. I got to turn a distortion knob while writing the part— and that was so much fun.
