Etta Marcus is a 22-year-old singer, songwriter and musician hailing from South London. Her sophisticated, intense songwriting recalls the Americana sweep of Sharon Van Etten, Lana Del Rey at her most classicist and the biting emotional contrasts of Phoebe Bridgers.
Her debut mini album ‘The Death Of Summer & Other Promises’ is a combination of the personas that inhabited her previous releases. A few themes continued to crop up this time around as she felt her way through what the project would become, particularly in relation to womanhood and the female experience. “I think I was feeling a lot of frustration this year that's come out in my writing,” she explains. That sentiment led to the free-spirited anthem Girls That Play, a sunny “ode to girls” and the important female relationships in her life, and Theatre, a rough and raw single with a thrashing rock breakout. “I purposely was writing in a way that felt a bit more blunt. I'm not hiding behind metaphors,” Etta says.
Just like the album’s name, each track entices, inviting listeners into Etta’s little world. “I had the title, Death Of Summer & Other Promises, before I'd written anything,” she says. “It’s a lot about rebirth and growing up from a woman's perspective. I think it really means the transition between childhood and adulthood.” On the other side of that growth period is a musician who’s more confident in her artistry than ever before.
