It is very likely that Lopez was born in Spain but all references to his musical life allude to Mexico. He was a priest and a renowned organist who also played the bassoon. He was first employed by the Cathedral in Pueblo as organist and bassoonist but he was such a talented organist and singer that his responsibilities as a bassoonist waned. In 1654 Lopez was recognized in Mexico City for his compositional talents when he gave a choirbook containing his works to the authorities. With appointments as both organist and master of the chapel Lopez found it difficult to fulfill both roles in steadfast service. Nevertheless, he persevered later seeking to have the duties separated. This did occur but only after his death. The manner in which Lopez composed demonstrated a flowing polyphonic texture and artisanship. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
