Free Paintings

free paintings is an american art rock band formed by songwriter and tattoo artist jorge miguel callado in Oakland, CA circa 2016.


jorge was an art student in San Francisco who had been writing for the outsider folk music project “whorhaigh k.” After a slew of underwhelming solo performances with the sort of desperation that invited terrible nude gimmicks; jorge abandoned the project and redirected his aspirations toward sculpture and oil painting.


Over years of instability paired with heavy LSD and sedative use, a small Oakland apartment became the breeding ground for a series of agoraphobic breakdowns that inspired jorge to learn to record his own music.


The name ‘free paintings’ was conceived when resident artist Brian Weiss suggested the name “rotting vegetable matter” would be distasteful on album covers. The duo decided on a name they could use to promote music in the Craigslist free section, while also having a platform to purge their closets of all of their unwanted student art work.


Now residing in San Diego California, the free paintings band has employed various talents such as the beloved Alexander “banana man” Roman, Jake Bueno, Gabriel Mancera, Maddie from Rain on Fridays, Natasha Juarez, Andrew Castaneda, Ryan Bahm of <a href="spotify:album:6KdSHPD2muMWEp7QM3ka9y" data-name="Goof">Goof</a>, etc
