Freekwency

Freekwency is the solo alias of Benny Badge, producer and multi-instrumentalist crafting modern music with a vintage heart since the late 00s. Rooted in the sensibilities of 80s R&B, boogie, and electro, Freekwency has carved out a cult following with productions that echo the golden era of dub mixes and midnight radio—while pushing the genre forward.

Based in Melbourne by way of Adelaide, Benny launched Freekwency as a passion project—initially featuring <a href="spotify:artist:2Z9eNvb4X5eiypp6w5ToHk" data-name="Nite Class">Nite Class</a> vocalist <a href="spotify:artist:0Naz8w8LzUDgW2oGM886Gf" data-name="Penny Shum">Penny Shum</a>, to blend his lifelong love of soul music with his underground roots in DJing and breakdancing. His signature sounds include brooding synths, detuned pianos, and seedy drum machine symphonics—equally suited to sweaty dance floors or fondu for two.

His most infamous cut, “<a href="spotify:album:0uHOMr1NuV11F9tKRRefqd" data-name="Flip the Coin">Flip the Coin</a>&#34; (2012), co-written with longtime collaborator <a href="spotify:artist:6AlBGRAL69NErJAo7QdirA" data-name="Olmos">Olmos</a> (Oliver Graham), became an underground anthem of the friends-turned-lovers dilemma. That same tension—between desire and denial—runs through tracks like “Friend or Freek”, “Your Touch”, and other deeply romantic and suggestively autobiographical compositions.

A quiet but essential voice in the global modern funk movement, Freekwency’s early releases caught the attention of tastemakers like People&#39;s Potential Unlimited (PPU), Omega Supreme, and Yamwho&#39;s ISM Records. His work later helped seed the foundation of Gulf Point Records, his own imprint dedicated to “warm reflections of the past, and a reassuring nod to the future.”
