Future/Modern formed late in the winter of 2020 in St. Louis, Missouri. The band represents a significant stylistic departure for all members from their bands preceding the formation of Future/Modern. Guitar/keyboard player Stephen Favazza hails primarily from synth-pop and shoegaze, while bassist/synth player Matthew Derouin and drummer Harold Covey come from hard rock, math
rock and punk. The resulting sound explores new sonic landscapes that defy convenient classification.
Future/Modern blends the instrumental sensibility of post-rock, the visceral energy of 90’s alternative, and the electronic textures of modern synth-pop and chill-wave to create a sound with broad stylistic appeal. Their music shifts purposefully between the serene and ambient, lush
and electronic, loud and bombastic… and everything in between.
CHROMA EP:
With their debut EP, Chroma, released on El Gran E Records out of Texas, Future/Modern introduces listeners
to an eclectic and ambitious collection of songs, beginning with the ambient, calm waves of “I Can Purr Like a Cheetah” to the dynamic and turbulent “Dog Walker”. The second half shifts with the quirky, synthesizer driven “314oh8” and the moody but energetic “Promising Illness”. The release is accompanied by Dead Mall, Future/Modern Remixed; 12 tracks of
inventive reimagining by artists local and far-flung.
