While bands like Guns and Roses, STP, and Soundgarden were enjoying major label promotion across the '90s, an LA-based power trio called "Fuzz Beloved" were destined to remain in the underground, despite their compellingly original interpretation of psychedelic rock, with classic influences such as Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and Blue Cheer.
Not all talented artists "make it." For years, the ensemble rehearsed at a dismal facility in Van Nuys, honing their unique sound. They gigged around LA, organized two music festivals in the Mojave desert, and even pulled off a summer DIY tour of the U.S. in 1994.
Prior to breaking up, however, the group managed to record a magnificent full-length album, which remained shelved for years. It was recorded in a church-like living room in South Pasadena where bass player David Melbye grew up. On the album, Melbye and guitarist Kevin Kareth alternate vocal parts and harmonize together. Melbye alternates between 4 and 8-string bass and also plays acoustic guitar on two tracks. Throughout the album, Kareth's guitar work is nothing short of brilliant, and drummer Mark McNulty holds down a solid, laidback groove.
Melbye went on to form the mellower project Ludivine, whose music was used in popular TV shows, and, eventually, he formed the internationally acclaimed avant-psych band Heavy Water Experiments.
