What do KISS, zombie punk, and Loretta Lynn have in common? Gina Barcal.
The Chicago-born musician has long been a creative chameleon—fronting zombie-punk outfit Venom Lords and stepping into Paul Stanley’s boots in the all-female KISS tribute band Slutter. But with her debut solo EP Midwest ’til the End, Barcal steps into the spotlight as a songwriter whose voice is rooted in Americana, country grit, and Midwest storytelling.
Recorded in Nashville with top session players, the six-song collection blends sharp songwriting with a nostalgic nod to her upbringing on country classics like Loretta Lynn, George Jones, and Merle Haggard. From rollicking first single Long Tall Lover to the heartfelt family tribute Girl from the River Town and the reflective Smoky Mountain High, Barcal’s songs pull directly from her own life and heritage.
“I’ve retired the makeup,” she says of her past projects. “This is me coming forward as a songwriter and artist. I’m no longer hiding.”
Now based in the Indiana Dunes with her husband, dogs, and vintage Ford Ranchero, Barcal embraces the tension between rural edges and city dive bars. With Midwest ’til the End, she delivers a raw, honest debut about love, loss, and finally finding home right where she started.
