In 2018, Dutch- Ghanaian Gita Buhari broke through with the single "Mariama" featuring Arjuna Vlasblom, leading to their first EP Queen of Nothing (2020). The EP, with dreamy guitars and electronic percussion, received attention from 3FM, ELLE, and Vogue. Gita’s music explores themes of womanhood and bicultural identity, with tracks like "Anger" responding to social injustices and the #MeToo movement. Her song “Broken Woman Blues” addresses destructive relationships, while her live performances include powerful interpretations of songs like "Strange Fruit" to highlight racial discrimination. Gita has performed at festivals like Grasnapolski, Motel Mozaique, and Valkhof, and released her latest EP Blood Lily (2022) with a live audiovisual show in Paradiso and BIRD. With a deep need to express her emotions, Gita connects with her audience through raw honesty and powerful storytelling. She continues to collaborate with other artists, bringing her personal experiences to life in every track.
