Grethe & Jorgen Ingmann were the husband-and-wife duo who won the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest for their home country, Denmark. The pair had been wed since 1956, by which time guitarist Jorgen Ingmann (born in Copenhagen on April 26, 1925) was already established among Denmark's leading performers. Working alongside jazz violinist Svend Asmussen brought Ingmann his earliest acclaim, during the 1940s and early '50s; by the late '50s, however, he was performing as Jorgen Ingmann & His Guitar and, in January 1961, he scored a massive hit with his version of the guitar instrumental "Apache" -- a U.K. hit for the Shadows the previous year. Ingmann's cover rose to number two in the U.S. chart and number four in Canada. He followed up with "Anna," a number 54 hit that summer, while Danish hits included the classic "Tequila" and "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie." In 1963 Ingmann and wife Grethe took part in the Danish Melodi Grand Prix competition; they won, and were promptly dispatched to London to represent Denmark at Eurovision -- staged in the U.K. that year after the scheduled host, France, refused. There, "Dansevise" proved triumphant. The duo continued performing together into the 1970s. They divorced in 1975. ~ Dave Thompson, Rovi
