One of Oakland’s most outlandish bands, Gumby’s Junk is a nightmare cartoon. By assembling classical-inspired circus riffs, rhythmic jokes, lilting bass riffs and theatrical vocals, the art-rock trio's sophomore album Business & Pleasure contains the full range of human emotion in this perpetual stew.
On Business & Pleasure, Gumby's Junk channels the motion sickness intensity of their intoxicating, connective and vertigo-inducing live performance. Written in full collaboration by three long time friends, the album is the fully realized form of their singular blend of maximalist through-composed tracks drizzled with freakish improv. The record mimics the experience of finally popping your ears after a long descent into a staticky RadioShack basement. With mixing handled by art rock legend Greg Saunier of Deerhoof, this puzzle made up of a bunch of dull razor blades was assisted into sonic coherence.
