Hen in the Foxhouse is the lo-fi indie project of Honduran American artist, Elena Sophia Krell. Born in Germany and growing up in Europe and Latin America, Elena was a latercomer to songwriting, starting at age 27.
She sang opera semi-professionally for five years before getting a PhD in Performance Studies from Northwestern University and going on to teach in the Women, Feminist, and Queer Studies program at Vassar College for nine years. They transitioned to working freelance as a writer and focusing on music full-time in June 2023.
They've made 5 full-length records and 3 EPs total, one record, one 5-song EP, 6 singles as Hen in the Foxhouse, a project started mid-Covid 2021.
The most recent album Look Up was recently described as "an aquatic ecosystem of disparate plant and animal life that nevertheless belong together" by Broken 8 Records) Inspired by Roberto Carlos, Natalia LaFourcade, The Magnetic Fields, and Philip Glass, Hen in the Foxhouse defies the bounds of genre but at its core feels by turns shoegazy and alt-country.
Since 2022, Elena has collaborated with Ru Lemer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist out of the UK. The two met in Rhinebeck at Clubhouse Studios during the recording of "As Eli" (Elias Krell). The two co-produce every track. Former project names include Elias Krell & the No Good, and The Homoticons. Krell lives in the Hudson Valley of New Yor with her chihuahua terrier, Ralphy.
