When Covid hit, the studio I worked at was shut down and the tours for the management company I was employed by were canceled. My world definitely changed. I started this project as the antithesis to my other work (staff songwriter in Nashville's country and pop circles, folsky singer-songwriter artist) and began writing and creating more and more in this alt-rock / pop rock vein. Brother Sundance and I met up in a restaurant in the middle of the pandemic where I showed him a demo of Run for Cover. Within a few days, we were sending files back and forth and working on the tune. Funny enough, after we cut the Vocals at his studio we realized I had sung into the back of the vintage U87 he had, and it gave this phasey, warbly, interesting tone. So, I went and rented a vintage u87 from Blackbird Studios and recut the vocals in my home studio, hoping to keep some of that "Accidental vibe" on the track. I like to think I succeeded, as the lead vocal is all one take.
Howard Nunnelly (Ella Langley) and I first started Hip Check after I sent him multiple demos during the pandemic. He'd lay down drum parts from his old childhood room in Missouri and we'd collab.
Hip Check is Aaron Moses and Howard Nunnelly.
